This year's Boston Business Journal Power 50 list again spotlights the men and women in Greater Boston who are not only leading by example but who are also not afraid to take chances. But what is power and how is it attained? Is it by dint of a position or job title? By a vote of peers or constituents? They represent a wide range of businesspeople and industry sectors — top executives in technology, financial services, life sciences, health care and higher education, along with the movers and shakers in real estate, law, advertising, nonprofits, venture capital and sports entertainment.

This year’s Power 50, the eighth such list for the Business Journal, was compiled by the editorial staff, who started off by examining the 100-plus nominations that came in from our readers. Judges looked specifically for those who have been difference makers and influencers in the last year.

Whether those selected were making their Power 50 debuts or repeaters, judges worked hard to compile a list that reflects the people in the business community who get things done and wield their influence for the good of the community, while also celebrating the diversity of Boston's communities, industries and personalities.
